Health is Wealth
What happens when income is relatively stable, expenses rise, and "free" is no longer free? The common American feels the crunch, despite their hard work. Unfortunately, "working hard" is not the sole barometer for financial stability and it’s very expensive be poor. This week, the hosts examine over-employment and how healthcare connects with all of it.
Word of the Week [1:51]: Over-employed: What happens when you have more month than money? The U.S. Department of Labor Statistics has an entire category that describes these folks and it's not what you think.
Phase 1 [4:44]: Gig Economy: Does full-time work mean you are all set financially? Not necessarily. Many people need a few more gigs on the side to make ends meet. Forbes.com recently addressed why 8.9 million Americans are working multiple jobs like Uber, Fiverr, Airbnb, and more. The side hustle is quickly becoming a mainstay to get by.
Phase 2 [25:20]: Prevent Preventive Care: SCOTUS will rule later this summer on a case challenging the Affordable Care Act’s requirement insurance companies cover preventive care. Two Christian business owners and six other Texans feel they should not have to cover the PrEP program that prevents HIV transmission. Other popular services like breast cancer screenings and mental health screenings could turn into out-of-pocket expenditures if SCOTUS goes their way.
